What Kind of Toothbrush and Toothpaste Are You Using?

Posted .

Your dental products can either make your job easier or harder, depending on how effective they are. Today our Keystone Dental Group team in Indianapolis, Indiana, is going to remind you of some things to consider when choosing your brushing products, namely, toothbrush and toothpaste.

Toothbrush
Use one with soft-bristles to protect tooth enamel and gum tissue as it cleans. A brush with rounded bristles helps the gums, and flat or multilevel brushes clean exceptionally well. For people with small mouths, a smaller toothbrush head will let you reach the molars in the back. Manual and electric or battery-powered brushes are all effective. If you just can’t seem to brush for two minutes each session, an electric or battery-powered brush is best for you. After cleaning, air-dry, uncovered before your next brushing session. You should replace your toothbrush (or the head) 3-4 months, or as soon as you see the bristles fraying.

Toothpaste
Your toothpaste should be chosen based on your oral health needs. A tooth whitening paste gets rid of stains on the teeth and lightens the enamel, while a desensitizing paste prevents sensitive teeth from pain from hot or cold temperature extremes. A fluoride toothpaste will help you fight cavities, and an anti-gingivitis paste helps with red, bleeding gums. If you have a propensity towards tartar (hardened plaque) then a tartar-control toothpaste will be your best bet.
