Gum Disease in Children: The Facts

Posted .

You may have heard that gum disease is actually a serious problem that you should have treated as quickly as possible, but did you know that there are a few common rumors that are accepted as fact too often. For instance, did you know that your children are actually as vulnerable to gum disease as you are?

As you probably know, one of the most important things you can do to help your child avoid gum disease is helping them brush their teeth. Unfortunately, your children might not enjoy brushing, which makes it far more difficult to prevent gum disease. In other words, if you’re interested in helping your child avoid gum disease, you’ll need to help them brush and floss until they’re old enough to do brush on their own. Still, even when they’re able to brush on their own, you might need to monitor them until they start to brush thoroughly.

You see, gum disease can actually lead to several serious problems. If your child has gum disease, they could ultimately have consistent bad breath and could lose the bone structure that supports their teeth. If this happens, your little one’s teeth could shift, and they could even lose their teeth prematurely. Similarly, gum disease can lead to sensitive teeth.

Of course, there are several options we could recommend to help your child prevent gum disease. For example, brushing and flossing can help you fight off gum disease, but may also be enough to help you reverse it. Still, our team could offer you specific advice.
