Dealing with Dental Anxiety

Posted .

Some people have no problem with visiting the dentist, no matter if it is for a routine cleaning and exam, or a major treatment. Other people experience anxiety, panic, or even full-blown fear at the mere thought of a dental appointment. Some people are uncomfortable with the feeling of being out of control while they are in the chair, while others may have had a bad experience when they were younger. Some people are embarrassed about the condition of their teeth. If the prospect of a dental appointment makes you uncomfortable, there are steps you can take to get past your anxiety. After all, if you avoid seeing the dentist, your teeth may pay the price later in life.

One of the best things you can do is talk to our dentist, Dr. Fahad Javed about your anxiety. It can help to ask questions about the treatment so you understand what is happening. This may make you feel more at ease. You can also arrange for a signal if you start to feel uncomfortable during your appointment and you need to take a break. You can also ask the dentist about bringing listening to music or a book on tape while you are in the chair to help take your mind off the appointment. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas can also help you relax during your visit. Nitrous oxide will put you at ease, but will not put you to sleep. You will still be able to communicate with the dentist and his team if you need to do so.
